Rockfalls & road closures
Falling rocks and early snow cause roads to close
Serious rockfall closed the main road between Bourg d'OIsans and Briançon on Saturday evening, leaving the narrow D220 as the only access route into 2Alpes. The road, known locally as Les Travers, is made difficult by single track sections and overhanging rock, and is impassable to heavy vehicles.
Elsewhere in the Alps early snowfall made driving conditions difficult, with more and more roads closing as the day progressed, starting with the Col du Galibier between Serre Chevalier and Valloire shortly after 12:30 followed by Iseran and Petit St Bernard at about 1pm, and finally the Col de la Madeleine, Cormet de Roseland and the cols de La Croix de Fer and Mont Cenis during the afternoon and early evening.
Roads between Isere and Savoie are not expected to reopen until Monday lunchtime at the earliest.
